We are entering a new digital revolution, the cross pollination of the physical and virtual worlds has never been seen before. Gaming, digital fashion, NFTs and the Metaverse are at the forefront of the future of creativity.

We have seen gaming rise up as a hot topic, and with it the concept of digital skins, appealing to both gamers on Fortnite through to digital couture shown at fashion weeks. Experiencing immersive escapism digitally from your own home through VR or simply just looking at your device has endless opportunities, enabling complete freedom to experiment with identities through fashion and beauty. Or walk-through pioneering architecture or an art exhibition.

NFTs, one of this year’s biggest topics in the art world took crypto currency and made it a tool for the digital artist and art collector alike to drive a new avenue in the art industry. Whilst its early days, its visual appeal viewed purely on devices will drive trends.

It’s also interesting to see how the pioneers in this field are looking at colour, one might think that it’s all about brights. However, as the physical and digital worlds blend, the application of colour in the digital world has a renewed perspective.

“In my mind I’ve noticed that digital art is very much a sunset/late night thing. My favourite colours to use when I want to create a miraculous, enchanting imagery are in the orange, pink, purple spectrum and those that can be called “neon” or “acid”, much like what we can see in the night streets of big cities.” Virtual Rags Digital Fashion Studio

“For the Auroboro’s Biomimicry Digital Collection, the colours were about mirroring nature's brilliant design by looking at and working with the most exquisite and unusual of our world's palette that is nearly impossible to replicate physically. For example, the translucent quality of deep-sea creatures and their gentle bioluminescent glow or the saturated and vibrant colour combinations of flower petals that blossom at night.”Auroboros Digital & Physical Couture

The way colour is being used in the digital world is filtering through to the physical.

On one side we have the fiery, hyper tones, On the other side we see softer, dreamlike tones coming through, previously not associated with the digital world.

Utilising brighter tones creates dramatic effect, however consider adding more depth into the tones. In our palette there is an undertone of blue, adding a level of sophistication.

The softer toned pastels are increasingly popular, they are being used to create a digital interpretation of the real world, however they have a sourness and hardness to them that gives them that digital edge that can be applied across all sectors of design from soft furnishings, activewear, beauty, packaging and then right back round to where it began in digital.
